Graduate Scheme

If you are a graduate with a passion for science or engineering, our two year programme could help you develop your skills through first-hand experience and practical training in a number of areas – ranging from project management to bid preparation to engineering and technical work.

Expect to be challenged. You’ll need a well-rounded, fresh-thinking and self-motivated outlook to make the grade, but rest assured you’ll be supported every step of the way by assigned mentors who will encourage personal and professional growth. It’s a fantastic opportunity to become involved in high-profile projects at an early stage and work alongside experienced senior colleagues.

Andreas joined DBD in 2015 after completing a degree in Chemical with Nuclear Engineering (MEng) at Imperial College London. Andreas has joined the engineering team, where he has worked primarily on process design and process modelling. Using specialist modelling programs, Andreas has produced bespoke models to simulate the fusion fuel cycle and various reprocessing facilities. These models have been used by both DBD and clients to help with process design. While on the graduate scheme, Andreas is looking to work on secondments with the safety and commercial teams to expand his knowledge of the business.

After completing his Chemical and Process Engineering degree, Robert started at DBD’s Head office in November 2013. Initially starting as a graduate process engineer, Robert has also been introduced to various business areas, getting involved in project management, quality management, and technical bid work. Robert has been involved in some of DBD’s international projects, gaining experience of innovative fusion works and attending discussions at the offices of international clients and subcontractors.

Blair completed his degree in Chemical Engineering with Energy Engineering in 2011 and joined DBD in the same year. In his first year, he worked on the Evaporator D commissioning team with Sellafield. Here he witnessed the practical implications of design decisions and began to understand some of the commissioning issues made by simple design office changes. He has since been involved in two decommissioning projects on Sellafield site. In the course of Blair’s involvement with Sellafield projects, he has gained experience of technology readiness assessments where he assessed proposed technologies in order to establish whether they would work well and safely within the radioactive environment.

Laura joined DBD in September 2011 following the completion of a course in MEng Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. Since she has joined DBD, Laura has been given a number of responsibilities and has been introduced to various international clients. Laura has contributed to a variety of engineering and commercial projects from fusion modelling to Sellafield decommissioning projects. In addition to this, Laura had been involved in a design project which saw her visit a customer in Japan.

Hugh was the first graduate to be taken on by DBD in October 2007 having done a masters degree in Chemistry (MChem). Hugh has worked in a number of different areas, initially providing support to optioneering studies which were conducted to solve a range of engineering and technical challenges across the nuclear industry. Hugh has spent a number of years working on a Sellafield legacy silo decommissioning project, composing flowsheets for the active and inactive species to be handled and developing the technical programme for underpinning the behaviour of reactive materials that challenge the safety case of the associated plants. Recently, Hugh spent 10 months working on secondment at the ITER fusion project in France as part of the radwaste treatment and storage team. Hugh is also working towards Chartership.
